Kansas is all about producing the finest cattle in the world. And we no doubt do, year after year for a couple hundred years. In order to maintain such high quality Kansas livestock producers need alot of governmental and public support. Milions of dollars each month are spent to ensure that our ranchers, breeders, processors and purveyors are able to move cattle from the range to your dinner plate with maximum efficiency. So far it has worked quite well.
Dogs are not as high a prioroty with the USDA here in Kansas. Despite Federal, State and local laws to protect them, many dogs still spend their entire lives in a state of neglect, used as breeders to supply the needs of pet stores around the country. Even dogs in our own backyards are being chained for long hours each day, not afforded anough shade or protection form the elements or a source of clean drinking water. The problems that caninis familiaris faces in Kansas are not solely a problem of licnesed and backyard breeders or dealers.
Certainly not all of the states 500+ breeders keep their animals in substandard conditions. In fact this website will be showcasing breeders who exemplify how a good breeder cares for their dogs. When a breeder's love of money overtakes their love of the breed, the animals in their care are viewed purely as profit makers without any regard for the health of the animal or the integrity of the breed. It has been shown that majority of puppies who are born and reared in substandard conditions will develop health problems that can last a lifetime. Pet store shoppers should demand that the pet store owner provide them with the name fo the breeder. If you cannot visit them yourself request a free puppy report to learn about possible problems with the breeder. While our state has passed legistlation to improve a dog's life, there is more that needs to be done to ensure the humane treatment of these animals.
Breeders take alot of heat but what about ourselves? Check out the statistics from one city animal shelter and you'll see that the number of animals surrendered to
an Animal shelter end up being euthanized. Check out why this happens
